Well, the Crystal Heart Robot can be found in a large corridor of crystals, with there being only a flimsy bridge over protecting you from a sharp demise. But what if the Infection can animate things that were never alive? Since the Crystal Heart is found in the Robot that appeared to be the only functional one, it can be assumed that it was a required part to make them run. We also know that the Infection, which comes from the Radiance, can reanimate corpses. In the Hollow Knight community, it's somewhat of a consensus that the crystals are related to the Radiance.
We learn from Myla that the crystals sing, an attribute commonly associated with the Radiance. But robots? In Hallownest? How does that work? Enter, Crystal Heart.
This means that they are not just statues. The spell itself is on a snail shamans body inside. The shape of a bug, but clearly with jointed limbs. The Descending Dark spell is located in the Crystalised Mound which is in the southeast of Crystal Peak. What are they? They appear to be robots of some sort.
